Syracuse, New York police officers are actively looking for a 30-year-old woman who disappeared with her 4-year-old son last November.
According to court records, a New York family court judge granted full child custody to the young boy's father. However, the child's mother ran away with him in November 2011 and has not been seen since, police say.
Shortly after the woman took off with the child, a family court judge ordered her to return her son to his father. A Syracuse police sergeant says the woman ignored the judge's order, and the judge issued a custodial interference warrant for her arrest.
Because the woman and the child are still missing, the judge issued a second warrant for her arrest for custodial interference in January 2012, court records show.
Police say the boy has a serious medical condition, and his father is especially concerned because the child has not been to see his doctor in several months.
The Syracuse Police Department spokesman says the department deals with many cases of interference with child custody and visitation, but this case is unique because of the child's illness. It is also unusual to have two warrants for the missing parent's arrest, he says.
The sergeant says police officers have followed numerous leads trying to find the woman, but they have been unable to locate her and the child. Her last known address was on the south side of Syracuse.
When parents decide to end their relationship and there is a child involved, a lot of emotions come into play. As a parent, it is so difficult to imagine not seeing your child every day. Sometimes those worries and concerns drive parents to act irrationally and uncharacteristic to their normal behavior. A child custody situation is difficult for everyone. Ultimately decisions are based on the best interest of the child.
