As New Yorkers recently learned, after 14 months of marriage, British actor-comedian Russell Brand, filed for divorce from his wife, singer, Katy Perry. Brand, 36, says the divorce is the result of irreconcilable differences. He filed Dec. 30, 2011 in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Brand told the Associated Press in a statement that he regrets things did not work out with Perry. "I'll always adore her, and I know we'll remain friends," he says.

Perry met Brand at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Brand hosted the event and Perry performed. The couple announced their engagement in January 2010 and married the following October. Their wedding was in India at tiger reserve resort.

In March 2011, Brand told reporters marrying Perry gave him strength. He said his relationship with her keeps him from focusing exclusively on his work. Likewise, Perry often publicly praised Brand. In August 2011 at the VMAs, she said she married him because he is smart and she learns a lot from him.

Speculation was rampant that the pair's marriage was in trouble after they were spotted without their wedding rings during the 2011 holidays.

It is unknown if the couple signed a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage. Naturally, their division of property will first be determined by what pre-marital documents and agreements were made between the couple. Even for the Hollywood elite, it is important that a fair and equitable division of the couple's property and assets is made. Sometimes, in order to come to a resolution, the couple, with the aid of their attorneys, will negotiate fair compromises.
